Pros & Cons: Villa Las Tronas – Alghero, Sardinia

We are truly torn on our opinion of this hotel.  While there were parts that were fantastic, there were also things that made us feel that we grossly overpaid.  Today we are sharing our views of the pros and cons of this property so you can decide for yourself.

PROS:

Breakfast Buffet

Wow, they really know how to start the morning off right!  There was always a plentiful spread to start the day.

This cheese spread alone stole Brian’s heart!  He wanted to wheel it over to our table!

For me, I enjoyed a cappuccino with a view each morning!

The View

The hotel is built on the edge of the cliff.  The water is so clear you can see the rock formations below.  It makes for a truely gorgeous view.

Swimming Options

Villas Las Tronas offers both a sea swimming area as well as a pool with a view.  They offer complimentary snorkel equipment for use by the guests.  Also, there is a waiter/lifeguard on duty by the pool who can save your life whether you are drowning or in need of a drink!

On the back side of the property, they have a few chairs and umbrellas so you can enter the water directly.  It’s not the stunning views of the front but at least it’s a place where you can enjoy the sea.

There is also a pool area for those that just like to admire the salt water from afar.  This area offers lovely views from the comfort a lounge chair.

Main Areas

The common areas are really stunning.  The furniture is reminiscent of the time period from the original use of the building when it housed Italian royalty.  It was fun to wonder throughout and imagine the history that was within the building.

CONS:

Balcony

We paid extra for a room with a balcony.  While we enjoyed the views, we were disappointed in the lack of privacy.  It was as though we were sharing the balcony with the entire floor.

Pool Hours

Unfortunately, they close the umbrellas and take off the cushions in the early evening when there is still a few hours of day light left.  We felt forced to leave the pool before we wanted.  The chairs below have comfy thick white pads during the day.  Also if you are taking a swim, you must do so with the cleaning hose as well.  It was hogging the pool everyday in the late afternoon.

Distance to Alghero

While the location wasn’t a huge con for us, it should be noted that the property was about a 15 minute walk from Old Town Algehero.  We didn’t mind the walk out for dinner however the walk back was quite dark due to a lack of street lights.  It felt like a very safe town and we did not experience any issues.  Everyone we met was very friendly.

Plain Rooms

The rooms were quite plane and lacked the grandeur of the rest of the building.  It may sound picky but for a 5-star hotel with the price tag to go with it, we expected more.

General Up-Keep Needed

Overall this property is in need of a deep scrub and a new coat of paint.  When we walked around to check out the spa, the outside gardens and pond were dead and green.  We were there in July therefore it should have been a peak time to have these maintained.  We ended up not booking any treatments as we were turned off.

Key Rules

Every time we would leave the property, they made us turn in our key(at the front desk).  It was an old school key rather than the typical magnetic cards.  It was a practice that made us feel uncomfortable as they knew exactly when we were gone from the property.  We did not have any issues however we did not like the process.

Overall we would give this property 3.5 to 4.0 stars versus the 5.0 stars that they claim.  While we enjoyed our stay, we didn’t feel the price tag matched the overall experience at the property and there are a few areas that can be approved before reaching ultimate luxury.

Have you ever stayed at this property?  What was your opinion?  Are we being harsh or do you agree?

  • It looks like a beautiful property with some nice pros. I have never stayed there or reviewed a property. I think your cons are valid. I would definitely have a problem leaving my key when I left! Having read your review, I would still consider staying there, just to experience the beautiful aspects. Maybe they will address some of these issues, if they read your review. Thanks for sharing!
