This Whiskey Wednesday with Brian, I will be featuring:
Angel’s Envy – Bourbon – 86.6 Proof
Quick back story: There is a term in the whiskey world known as “angel’s share”. The “angel’s share” is the portion of liquid which evaporates from the cask during the aging process. It is a small amount and it happens with every cask. This bourbon is aged 4-6 years in American white oak barrels then to create it’s “uniqueness”, it is aged in port casks for 3-6 months. Thus becoming the Angel’s Envy.
The bottle design is unique with angel wings printed on the back of the bottle which can be seen through the front. They seem to be going for a refined or high class look to their creation. The sticker on the side of the bottle lets the drinker know the exact batch and bottle number they are drinking. There is also a note which reads: “All Bourbons are aged in charred white oak barrels. And in that respect, Angel’s Envy is just like every other bourbon, however, unlike other bourbons, Angel’s Envy is finished in port wine casks, giving it a complex flavor you won’t find anywhere else. Indulge and discover dissent.”
First look, the bourbon is lighter in color vs. my previous bourbon posts. Lower proof, so this should be smooth and easy to drink.
Now let’s get to the taste…
The Smell: Very sweet, no alcohol burn, a little bit of berry
Taste: Sweet berry, vanilla notes, maple and a little spice
Finish: Clean finish, with the tasting notes above fading quickly. It’s like washing your mouth out with a port wine after a nice meal.
Cost is around $45 bucks. I think it is a smooth drinking bourbon to add to your collection and consume when you want to mix it up a little bit. Definitely prefer this one as an after dinner drink. I would recommend picking one up this month and sharing it with your friends and family during the dessert course at Thanksgiving dinner. It will pair well with any sweets at the table.
