Ultimate Adventure Activity in Victoria Falls Zambia

One of the star attractions during a visit to Africa is the mighty Victoria Falls. The falls is on the Seven Wonders of the World list making it a sought after attraction when visiting Zimbabwe. The falls are created by the Zambezi River that borders Zimbabwe and Zambia and are best viewed head-on from the Zimbabwe side. However for the ultimate adventure activity, make time to visit Victoria Falls Zambia and get ready for an adrenaline rush!

THE SETTING

Victoria Falls does not hold the record for tallest or widest falls however it does have the world’s largest volume when combining both height and width. This creates a sheet of water that divides Zimbabwe and Zambia. While the views from Zimbabwe offer a view of the falls, Zambia offers the most thrilling activity found just off of Livingstone Island.  When arriving to The Royal Livingstone Hotel for the meeting point of the tour, the falls are instantly identified by the rainbow in the distance.

THE BOAT

Once arriving at the hotel for the tour, there is a quick 15 minute boat tour that takes you over to Livingstone Island. The boat ride is like the calm before the storm. It’s a relaxing ride over to the island. Once arriving at the island there is a quick 10 minute walk and 5 minute swim to the main attraction.

DEVIL’S POOL

Ok, so you are probably thinking what makes Victoria Falls Zambia so special and why are we taking a boat ride to this island? During the months of late August through January the water level is slightly lower creating a pool at the top of the falls.  This is known as Devil’s Pool. The tour is part of the Devil’s Pool swim which literally takes you to the edge of the falls! As you can see below, our guide was instructing us where we would be jumping into the pool.

For the most heart-racing, adrenaline pumping, death-defying activity, take a jump from the rocks into the calmer water above the falls. As you can see in the right of the photo, the water is gushing past just to the right!

The sheer volume and speed of the water falling over the edge is evident by the strong mist cloud and prominent rainbow that consistently can be seen!

A selfie once we were sitting in Devil’s Pool was a must!

It is an incredible work of nature that has created this pool. Years of erosion has created  a lip on the edge of the falls. Due to this lip, the water is shallow and the speed of the water falling over is reduced thus creating the natural pool.

As a tip, we highly recommend visiting Victoria Falls Zambia first and then cross over to Zimbabwe. The swim in the pool is exhilarating and heart racing enough. Once we saw the falls from the other side, I am not sure that I would have jumped into that pool!

THE TREAT

Following the exhilarating swim, the tour finishes with a nice treat. Since we took the morning tour, it was a lovely breakfast!

Following the breakfast in the outdoor setting, we headed back to the hotel via boat. It was a morning we won’t soon forget. It was an amazing experience and tops our list for the most adventurous activity we’ve ever done!  Don’t miss a trip to Victoria Falls Zambia during your next Africa trip!

  • This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. I’m not sure if I could get myself to leave the boat. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience!

    • It was pretty nerve racking to swim up to the edge and look over the side! It was crazy to look all the way down to the bottom of the falls. Quite the once in a lifetime experience!
