Valparaiso Street Art

“The Earth without art is just Eh.”

We had heard about the Valpo street art but WOW, we had never seen a place like it.  All through the streets there were colorful buildings that took on a life of their own.  Today we will take you on a virtual tour of some of our favorites!

The city of Valparaiso is built on the hillside therefore the narrow streets, sharp turns and many staircases create the perfect canvas for street art.

Every corner we turned had vibrant colors and interesting designs!

Valpo street art isn’t just limited to the sides of buildings, even the stairways are colorful here!

Can you believe all the colors and attention to detail in these shots?

There was no shortage of places for photo ops around the city!

Another part of the city that seemed more like art to us was the electrical lines!  We have never seen such a jumbled mess of wires.  We wouldn’t want to be a technician trying to decipher them!  Our tour guide told us that the city does not replace old wire and instead just add new ones on top to replace the old.

Overall we really enjoyed the Valpo street art.  You can either wander through the streets on a self guided basis or opt for a street art tour.  We had a wonderful tour with Cristian Alvarez Albani who gave us some history of the city while taking in the colorful views.  You can email him here.  We’d highly recommend him to anyone looking to learn more about this colorful city.

Overall we thought it was really interesting to see such widespread street art throughout the city.  Valpo street art is definitely the most colorful and unique art we have seen throughout a city!  It made for a very fun setting.

Do you enjoy viewing the street art when you travel?  What’s your favorite city for street art?

  • The imagination and talent of some people just amazes me. This street art is so joyful and colorful. What a wonderful place to explore :-) #WeekendWanderlust

    • Since I can barely draw a stick figure, I am always amazed at artistic abilities! Even more so when the canvas is the city.

  • What an artistic place! Can't wait to go there myself :) Thanks for sharing #WeekendWanderlust

  • There are so many wonderful photos here. It's definitely an online gallery that's for sure. I particularly loved the photo of you sitting on the coloured steps. I'm not a great art lover but I do like this kind that brings people into a city, celebrates their culture, brightens up areas that sometimes might look a little sad etc. The electricity lines also reminded me of when I went into the favelas in South America. There were even people working on them at the time which frightened me!! Gorgeous photos and article. #weekendwanderlust

    • It's sort of odd to notice electrical lines but they were crazy! Thank you for the kind comments.

  • Valparaiso looks like such a joyful place with all that colour from the street art. It's nice to walk around in an outdoor gallery. I can see many 'happies' must live there. Great post.

    • Perfect description, it is like an outdoor gallery. It's hard not to be happy in that city when you are surrounded by so much color!

  • I had never heard of Valpraiso before this post. Thanks for sharing - so much wonderful art!
I can't get over the photo of the wires! That would be such a nightmare to have to work with, not to mention a bit of an eye sore.

    • Glad we could introduce you to a new city Amanda! The wires certainly made getting photos tricky since it was hard to get a view without them.

  • I get giddy every time I see pictures of this city. They keep getting more and more murals and works of art. I would love to visit.

  • Didn't have time to visit Valparaiso on a trip to Chile this past January. I'm itching to go back to the country to see the city's vibrant colors and street art. Your photo essay is wonderful!

    • Thank you Erika! Hope you get the opportunity to go back and stop in Valparaiso. We were there over New Year's and really enjoyed the festivities.

  • Amazing!! I LOVE the colors and designs. I haven't seen much street art yet, but I can't wait to see fantastic places like this. It really gives the city a feeling of being alive. Love it!!
