How do you make family game night more exciting?    BOURBON!

Some of the bourbons I enjoy are what is know as “wheated”.

What is a “wheated” bourbon?

Typically, Bourbon has a mashbill that’s consists of: 75% Corn, 15% Rye and 10% Malt.
A wheated bourbon is the substitution of wheat for the rye.

Old Weller Antique comes from the W.L. Weller line of products and is distilled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky.  Old Weller Antique is named after William Larue Weller.  He is credited with being the first to make bourbon with wheat rather than rye.

The taste:  The first smell is a nice one with caramel, brown sugar and vanilla.  A soft taste at first with the continuation of caramel and vanilla, but then a burst of flavor adding in some oak and cinnamon.  The finish is a subtle combination of everything plus a little heat that leaves that beautiful taste in your mouth for a short period of time.

This one is a great value bourbon.  Availability tends to be hit or miss.  Depending on the market, you may want to grab a bottle if you see it.  If I’m out at my local store and its not there, I just wait a couple weeks and it is usually back on the shelf.  I’ve read a lot about people creating what is called “poor mans Pappy” using blends and different ratios of Old Weller Antique, Old Weller 12 and/or Weller Special Reserve.  I will have to try it out and do a blog post about it.  Gives me an good excuse to buy a couple more bottles = research!

The bottle is nothing exciting to look at but don’t be fooled, this bourbon is underpriced for how good it tastes.  Pick one up today for $20-$25 bucks.  It will make your Monopoly game a little more exciting!
